Face of society / සමාජයේ මුහුණුවර

 I was disciplined and civilized because my parents and society wanted me that way.

To be honest mostly (at home, School, professional environments) what I did was cracking jokes, shout, sing songs, read books, loitering, think of innovations and spend time being a mischievous person against social norms.

I always think social norms create barriers.

Until the norms are broken there will be no innovations.

Norms are a barrier to evolution.

මම විනයානුකුල සමාජීය හා සභ්‍යත්වය යන ආකෘතිය තුළ පිහිටා කටයුතු කළේ එහි අවශ්‍යතාවය මගේ පවුල හා බාහිර පරිසරය විසින් එම තත්ත්වය ඇති කළ හෙයිනි.

 සත්‍යය වශයෙන් නම් බොහෝ විට (ගෙදරදී, පාසලේදී, වෘත්තීය ස්ථාන වලදී) විහිළු තහළු කරමින්, කෑගසමින්, සිංදු කියමින්, පොත් කියවමින්, අයිස් ගසමින්, නව්‍යතා සිතමින් විනය විරෝධී ලෙස කටයුතු කළේය. 

මා සැමවිටම සිතන්නේ සභ්‍යත්වය නිසා නව්‍යතාවය සීමාවන බවයි. පවත්නා ආකෘතිය බිඳ හෙළනතාක් කල් නව්‍යතා ඇති නොවේ. 

එය පරිණාමයට බාධාවකි.

 

Clash of cultures / සංස්කෘතික ගැටුම

 

Sri Lankan history and culture span into 2500 years to the past.

But comparatively the modern American (USA) or western history and culture only spans into 600 years to the past.

Can we compare our great achievements of historical stone carvings from Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the folklore of Sri Lanka, and Buddhist pali cannon to their modern achievements in Cinema and literature like Transformers, Fast and Furious, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings?

This comparison came to my mind when understanding the two cultural evolutions against time.

Hence is it required to have a critical perception about modern western culture?

The question remains. 

අපේ සංස්කෘතිය වර්ශ 2500 ක් පරණයි.

නමුත් නුතන ඇමෙරිකානු අපරදිග සංස්කෘතිය වර්ෂ 600ක් පමණයි පරණ.

අපගේ ජනකතා, මිත්‍යා හා කැටයම් මෙන්ම ඔවුන්ගේ Transformers, Fast and Furious, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings සැලකිය හැකිද ?

ඔවුන්ගේ සංස්කෘතික පරිණාමය හා අපේ සංස්කෘතික පරිණාමය කාලය හා ගැලපීමේදී මට ඒවා ගැන මෙවැනි හැඟීමක් ඇතිවේ.

එවිට ඒවා විවේචනයේ වැරද්දක් තිබේ ද ?

   

Mockery and jokes / සමච්චලය සහ විහිළුව

 

The enjoyment of mockery is the feeling you get when you feel more above than others.

This feeling and the enjoyment linked to it is hard to explain.

I never wanted to degrade anyone during these thoughts and feelings.

This is a very complex emotion.

කෙනෙකුව සමච්චලයට ලක් කිරීමේ විනෝදය ඇත්තේ ඔබ තුළ පවත්නා ඔහුට වඩා තමා උසස් යන හැඟීම තුළය. 

එම තත්ත්වය මත පවත්නා විනෝදය පැහැදිලි කළ හැකි නම් මා ඉතාම සතුටු වෙමි.

නමුත් මා කිසි විටෙක අන් අය පහත් නොකොට කටයුතු නොකළෙමි.

මෙම තත්ත්වය හරිම සංකීර්ණයි.

Swaroopa (2014) : A surrealist and an artistic film by the great Dharmasena Pathiraja

 

Swaroopa (2014), one of Dharmasena Pathiraja's final films is loosely based on Franz Kafka's novella 'Metamorphosis'.

The film is well written to screen by Eric Ilayapparachchi and Dharmasena Pathiraja himself.

The film through tiny attention to detail by the filmmaker manages to grasp the social transformations that took place in late colonial and early post-colonial Sri Lanka.

This film reminds the viewers, surrealism from old Hollywood films like 'Eraserhead' (1977).

The film only focuses mainly on the contours of a rented apartment of a middle-class family. 

In this apartment lives, Gregory Samson and his family of father, mother, sister assisted by a maid, the household solely depends on the income of Gregory who is a traveling salesman for a pharmaceutical company.

Gregory bears the bulk of the financial responsibilities for the rent of the apartment, the violin lessons for his sister, and the general upkeep of the family. 

As a young medical representative who has to travel a lot, he forms relationships in his travels which do not seem to be lasting. One fine morning Gregory wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant insect.

The story continues from this moment onwards with great dialogue and beautiful visuals.

A film that is well made will live with you forever.

ස්වරූප (2014) : ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ ධර්මසේන පතිරාජ ගේ අධියතාර්තවාදී සහ කලාත්මක සිනමා කෘතිය

 

ධර්මසේන පතිරාජ ගේ අවසාන සිනමා කෘතියක් වන ස්වරූප (2014) ෆ්‍රාන්ස් කෆ්කාගේ කෙටි නවකතාවක් වන 'Metamorphosis' ඇසුරෙන් නිර්මාණය වුවකි.

මෙහි තිර රචනය එරික් ඉලයප්පආරච්චි සහ ධර්මසේන පතිරාජ අතින් හොඳින් නිමවී ඇත.

ඉතාමත් සියුම් සිනමාත්මක ලක්ෂණ වලට අවධානය යොමුකරන සිනමාකරුවා සංස්කෘතික මෙන්ම සමාජයීය විපර්යාසයන් නිදහසට පෙර සහ පසු සිදුවූ ආකාරය නරඹන්නාට පෙන්වීමට සමත් වී ඇත.

Eraserhead (1977) වැනි අධියතර්ත්වාදී පැරණි හොලිවුඩ් (ඇමරිකානු) සිනමා කෘති වල මතකයන් අවධිකරන මෙම නිර්මාණය නැවුම්ය.

මෙම සිනමා නිර්මාණය හරහා කුළියට ගත් මහල් නිවාසයක ජීවත් වන මධ්‍යම පාන්තික පවුලක පරිසරය හා ජීවන අත්දැකීම් නිරුපණය වේ.

මෙම කුලී මහල් නිවාසයේ ජීවත් වන්නේ ග්‍රෙගරි සැම්සන් නම් තරුණයා සහ ඔහුගේ පියා, මව, සහෝදරිය සහ නිවසේ මෙහෙකාරියයි.

මුළු නිවසම ග්‍රෙගරිගේ ආදායම මත යැපෙන අතර ඔහු වෘත්තියෙන් ඖශධ නිපදවන ආයතනයක සංචාරක වෙළෙන්දෙකි.

ග්‍රෙගරි විසින් පවුලේ සමස්ත මුල්‍යම වගකීම දරන අතර ඔහුගේ නැගණියගේ වයලීන් සංගීත අධ්‍යාපනය සහ පවුලේ මුලික වියදම්ද ඔහු විසින් දරයි.

සංචාරක තරුණ වෙළෙන්දකු ලෙස බොහෝ විට රට පුරා සංචාරය කරන ඔහු හට ගැළපෙන සමාජයීය මෙන්ම ප්‍රේම සම්බන්ධතාද පැවැත්වීම අපහසු වී ඇත.

එක්දිනක අවධිවන ග්‍රෙගරි දකින්නේ ඔහු විශාල කුරුමිණියකුට පරිවර්තනය වී ඇති බවකි.

මෙතනින් ආරම්භ වන චිත්‍රපටයේ කතාව සුන්දර දෙබස් සහ කැමරාකෝණ හරහා වර්ණවත් වේ.

මෙම සිනමා කෘතිය නරඹන්නාගේ මතකයේ සදාකල් රැඳෙනු ඇත.

The Newspaper (2020) : A confusing narrative of the Sri Lankan society

 

"The Newspaper (2020)" is a well-cinematographed film. But the narrative of the film is very confusing.

The film sometimes is not realistic but the intentions of the film are positive and it disregards the unrealistic nature of the film.

The film successfully depicts the very complex and confusing nature of the Sri Lankan society.

This is a good film with good intentions.

ද නිව්ස්පේපර් (2020) : ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සමාජයේ ව්‍යාකුල බව නිරුපණය කරන සිනමාත්මක ආඛ්‍යානය

 

"ද නිව්ස්පේපර්" (2020) සිනමා කෘතිය කැමරාකරණය අතින් ඉතාමත් ඉදිරිගාමී ස්වභාවයක් ගනී. නමුත් සිනමා කෘතියේ ආඛ්‍යානය ඉතාමත් ව්‍යාකුලයි.

සිනමා කෘතියේ පවත්නා අතාත්වික ස්වභාවය පවා නරඹන්නාට මඟ හැරෙන්නේ සිනමා කෘතියේ පවත්නා හොඳ අරමුණු නිසාය.

සිනමා කෘතිය ශ්‍රි ලංකාවේ සමාජ ක්‍රමය තුළ පවත්නා සංකීර්ණ මෙන්ම ව්‍යාකුල ස්වභාවය ඉස්මතු කිරීම අතින් සාර්ථක වී ඇත.

"ද නිව්ස්පේපර්" සිනමා කෘතිය හොඳ අරමුණු ඇති හොඳ සිනමා කෘතියකි.

Soosthi (2020) : A visually stunning but a bit misguided film

 

Soosthi (2020) is the debut film directed by Kushan Weerarathna.

The plot of the film revolves around a girl and a boy traveling around Sri Lanka postponing their suicide for one week.

The film tries to depict the minds of modern youth and their problems fusing creativity and dialogue.

The cinematography in the film is very commendable.

But the complexity of the film is misguiding the viewers and this is a big drawback to the film.

Overall the film has both positives and negatives.

සූස්ති (2020) : සිනමාත්මක වශයෙන් සාර්ථක නමුත් තේමාව අතින් අයාලේ ගිය ස්වභාවයක් ගන්නා සිනමා කෘතියක්

 

සූස්ති (2020) යනු කුෂාන් වීරරත්නගේ පළමු සිනමා කෘතියයි.

කතාවේ වස්තු බීජය වන්නේ ගැහැණු ළමයකු සහ පිරිමි ළමයකු (තරුණියක සහ තරුණයකු) තම සියදිවි හානිකරගැනීම සතියකට කල් දමා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙ පුරා සතියකට සංචාරය කිරීමකි.

නව නිර්මාණාත්මක බාවයකින් මෙන්ම නව්‍ය දෙබස් හරහා නුතන තාරුණ්‍යයයේ ප්‍රශ්ණ පෙන්වා දීමට මෙම සිනමා කෘතිය සමත් වී ඇත.

මෙම සිනමා කෘතියේ කැමරාකරණය ඉතාමත් හොඳය.

නමුත් මෙම සිනමා කෘතිය පසුගාමී වන්නේ එහි පවත්නා සංකීර්ණ ස්වභාවය නිසා නරඹන්නා අයාලේ යන ස්වභාවයක් හටගන්නා බැවිනි.

සමස්තයක් ලෙස මෙම සිනමා කෘතිය තුළ ධනාත්මක මෙන්ම සෘණාත්මක සිනමා ලක්‍ෂණ පවත්නා බව පැවසිය හැක.

Dadayakkaraya / Sansare Dadayakkaraya [ Leopard Do Not Bite] (2015) - A combination of greatness and confusion

 

"Leopard Do Not Bite" (2015) is a film I watched in 2019 in the cinema hall.

The film is loosely based on a novel by Simon Nawagaththegama, a renowned literary figure in Sri Lanka.

Though not exposed to the novel I enjoyed the film due to its combination of greatness and confusion.

The film had magnificent visuals through grand cinematographic excellence and also had a very confusing narrative style.

දඩයක්කාරයා / සංසාරේ දඩයක්කාරයා (2015) - ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨත්වය සහ ව්‍යකුලත්වය අතර සම්මිශ්‍රණයක්.....

 

දඩයක්කාරයා / සංසාරේ දඩයක්කාරයා (2015) සිනමා කෘතිය මා නැරඹුවේ 2019 දී සිනමා ශාලාවේදීය.

මෙම සිනමා කෘතිය නිර්මාණය කර ඇත්තේ සයිමන් නවගත්තේගම නම් ප්‍රකට සාහිත්‍යකරුවාගේ නවකතාවක් ඇසුරෙනි.

නවකතාව කියවා නොතිබුණද සිනමා කෘතිය වින්දනය කිරීමට හැකි වුයේ එහි පැවැති ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨත්වයේ සහ සංකීර්ණත්වයේ සම්මිශ්‍රණය නිසාය.

සිනමා කෘතිය තුළ දැවැන්ත මෙන්ම ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ කැමරාකරණයක් තිබුණු අතර ව්‍යාකුල සිනමා අඛ්‍යනයක් පැවතිනි.

Paangshu ( Earth ) (2020) - A walk down the memory lane of the hidden past of Sri Lanka

 

I was able to watch 'Paangshu' (Earth) [2020] in the cinema on the 29th of August, 2020.

The film is a reminder to the viewers on how to make a good film.

With great dialogue, cinematography, and acting this film becomes a milestone in Sri Lankan filmmaking.

මා හට පාංශු (2020) සිනමා ශාලාවේ අගෝස්තු 29 වෙනි දින, 2020 නැරඹීමට හැකිවිය.

මෙම සිනමා කෘතිය නරඹන්නාට සිහි කරන්නේ හොඳ සිනමා කෘතියක් බිහිවිය යුතු ආකාරයයි.

ඉතාම සාර්ථකව නිර්මාණය කරන ලද දෙබස්, කැමරාකරණය සහ රංගනය හරහා මෙම සිනමා කෘතිය ශ්‍රී ලාංකීය සිනමකරණයේ සංදිස්ථානයක් නිර්මාණය කරයි.
